RC 64bit

Post by Wodger » Sun Aug 02, 2009 1:22 pm

Well Peeps,

Following a lovely crash on the desktop (winXP 64bit) - I saw that the RC download was up and decided to take the plunge...
Installation went well, and the major drivers are in (graphics card and motherboard), but am having some issues finding compatible firewalls.
I was using Comodo, but although that installed fine, 20 seconds after booting back into windows I get a BSOD, so off it went...:P

Tried to get the windows Live to go in, but for some reason it doesn't download the wed installer

Pete

p.s. - Man this OS desktop takes some getting used to (been XP classic for years :S)

Hi Pete

Try F-Secure, which you can download here :
http://www.f-secure.com/en_EMEA/support ... rams/istp/

Or G Data which is also very good :
http://www.gdata-software.com/g-data-beta-test.html

Or Bullguard :
http://www.bullguard.com/windows7.aspx

Or Trend Micro :
http://tinyurl.com/ns2e9y

So there's a few to keep you busy :)

Thanks for that Max,

So which one would you recommend? - Can't believe that you run all of them (although I do know someone that does run 5 internet security suites and antivirus's at the same time :? )
Preferably want something free, reliable and not so much of a resource hog that I still wait ages to get into the desktop.

No further problems so far, but have had another issue I think Mainboard related - see post in General Chat - "mainboard?"
Live installers still not available still trying to get messenger up.

Office is on now and got Anydvd and Alcohol on without any problems - still have to get used to this desktop :)

Well F-Secure, G Data and Bullguard are I believe free until at least October when Windows 7 goes retail. There is also a beta of Norton Anti-Virus for Windows 7 available at the moment which of course is also free for the time being.

I have tried Kaspersky, F-Secure, AVG on Windows 7 and am currently giving G Data a try. It's supposed to be very good but I have to say it's a bit slow at installing updates and also hogs system resources when doing a scan.
I am scanning my C drive at the moment which is 500gb and so far it's taken 1 hr and 13 minutes with about another half an hour to go. It also makes typing this difficult as everything is delayed! and this is on a dual core processor :(

I would give F-Secure a try. I liked the interface and it was easy on system resources. Only reason I stopped using it was because for some reason it blocked my World Of Warcraft from working and no amount of messing about seemed to get around it. That might not be an issue for many other people but myself and Sasha play regularly so it needs to work.

Problem with HP drivers for printer "we will be releasing windows 7 drivers and utilities closer to the release date of Windows 7" - yeh thanks HP - that means I need to have the laptop connected to my printer for a while :P

Anyway, apart from my booting problem, this seems to be an interesting OS...

Still having trouble with windows update - still records an error when asked to check for updates, and also the windows live wlsetup-web installer - which appears to be missing from the downloads section at Microsoft?

Will have a go at the F-secure program later this week when I get time

Pete

EDIT: Found that windows 7 has drivers for the printer onboard - it just wasn't selected - DOH!

EDIT 2: Found an older copy of Live messenger 8.5 I had lying around and installed it - corrupted graphics for the contacts list (all blue and icons everywhere), but made do, then had the offer of upgrading - clicked yes and got the latest messenger version - all good now

You definitely have something else going on there Pete. I have installed Windows 7 64bit a number of times and no problems at all. There definitely isn't anything missing from the download on the Microsoft site.

Windows Vista drivers should work for your HP printer although I have always found HP to be a complete pain in the ass and always behind the times as far as drivers go. Their printers are good quality though :)

Well just tried to click get live essentials from their website - and I got told that it could not find the server listed? - as if not there - Not sure on this one, even tried to get it from another site linking to microsoft - could not find it either.
Also just tried to "check for updates" from control panel-system and security - windows update - and got this message:

"windows cannot search for new updates Error code: 8804402F - windows update encountered an unknown error" :?

Have you tried this link :

http://download.live.com/wlmail?wa=wsignin1.0

Also why not get a Canon or Epsom printer? Would save a fortune using compatibles :)

Must be something local blocking it. Can you access http://download.live.com/ ?

Yes - can access that, but when I click on download, and I go to the next page asking me to accept "run" etc, with the try again button on the right - it just sits there thinking and then the server not found screen comes on.

Tried in IE and it does the same and says it can't display the webpage

Haven't got around to installing a firewall yet - so what could be blocking it?

to Jeff: - managed to get the update though live messenger 8.5 - "do you want to update, click this window"
Updated fine

to bob: - no security suite on it yet, still just the op system firewall

to all: Just want to access the updates normally, don't know if it was a glitch during installation or what. Or even if my ISP is causing the issues...
Will check with the laptop later see if I am able to get that download patch and access windows update - If I can, then there is something amiss with this win7 install...

Right guys,

I have just done a complete reinstall of Win7 7100 build in the hope that I can find the cause of this nonsense with the windows update and windows Live.
First thing after I loaded windows was tried to get the "live essentials" - click the download button - after a few moments of trying to get the wlsetup-web installer - I get "internet explorer cannot display the webpage".
I go back and do a double try again which activates the wlsetup-all installer - same problem
I try with my laptop using XP SP3 and IE 8 - and within 4 seconds of clicking the download button, I get the window asking me to run or save the web installer - so it ain't the ISP or internet connection.

Try to update windows via control panel and after about 3 or 4 minutes it returns "windows could not search for new updates" error code 8024402F
Recent check for updates - never.

Here is the section in the WindowsUpdate log file in the windows directory: Apologies for the length
